Fennel Tart

Due to my (and my blog’s) birthday yesterday, today’s post isn’t quite as extensive as my other ones, but I will still not deny you my amazing fennel tart recipe.

Buckwheat and Berry Cake

Have you baked with buckwheat before? Despite its name, buckwheat has absolutely no relation to common wheat, quite the contrary: it’s gluten-free and therefore a frequent ingredient in my own cooking. But that’s not the only advantage. Buckwheat contains a ton of iron, potassium and B-vitamins. Its high silicea content does wonders for our skin, hair and nails.

From Quinoa to Millet to Polenta Porridge

There is a huge range of muesli and porridge recipes and myriad ways of preparing them. For the most part, our standard morning mueslis are quite plain: oatmeal or crunchy granola with milk and/or yoghurt, topped with berries. I like my porridge warm and extravagant, so every morning, I make my own individual, warm porridge variation. Here are four absolutely delicious, gluten-free and healthy porridge dishes featuring alternative grains. Definitely a health and energy boost to start the day!

Welcome Lent with our “Life changing bread”

Were you still partying like a maniac last night? Celebrating with never ending drinks and crazy costumes and stuffing your face with doughnuts and other naughty foods like there’s no tomorrow? Enough! At least for me and many other health-conscious people out there. Because today is the start of Lent and that means fasting for 40 days.

Cauliflower Pizza with Pesto, Grated Zucchini and Roasted Almonds

At the beginning of January, I gave you a pretty major preview when I told you about the weird-but-delicious cauliflower pizza I once ate in Amsterdam. Of course I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I tried to replicate it at home. You can find the result here…

Traybake Cereal Bars

Feel like ingratiating yourself with the neighbours this New Year? Or trying to sell your house or apartment? Easy peasy: just bake a tray of cereal bars. You’re now probably trying to figure out how selling real estate is related to cereal bars – well, it isn’t really. Yet indirectly, it is. I recently read that wafting the scent of baked goods through a property encourages a potential buyer to make a positive decision, and faster. The smell of something baking in the oven apparently makes people feel safe and reminds them of home. And these cereal bars emanate a particularly seductive aroma, so in my opinion, they’re the ideal sales tool – and subsequent reward! Wishing you a happy and successful New Year 2014…

Merry Christmas with Pavlova

A Pavlova is a meringue cake that is crispy on the outside with a soft and sweet centre, like a marshmallow. Classically, you’ll serve it with whipped cream and fresh fruit like raspberries, strawberries, kiwi or any other fruit you like. I always add vanilla ice cream on top as well, to make it even more scrumptious. I first tried this dessert about 9 years ago, when I lived in New Zealand. Back then, I was told it was the country’s national dish. A few years later, when I lived in Australia, I was told the exact same thing. So there seems to be a controversy with both Australia and New Zealand claiming this dish as theirs. The debate goes on to this day. What is a well-known fact is that the name, Pavlova, was chosen in honour of Anna Pavlova, the famous Russian ballerina, who toured both New Zealand and Australia in 1926. Hmmmm. I don’t really mind either way, to be honest – the Pavlova dessert tastes great in New Zealand, Australia AND on my Christmas dinner table. It’s an easy, delicious dish and ever since I spent time in the Southern Hemisphere, I’ve been baking it for Christmas every single year. Merry Christmas, everyone! May all the sweet magic of Christmas fill up your heart with joy and make each of your desires come true. And here’s the recipe… © Foto/Eva Fischer

Gifts from Nature and a Delicious Raspberry and Poppy Seed Cake

In Greek mythology, Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty and pleasure. Her son, Eros, is the god of love and stood for everything that’s erotic in this world. Up to this day, many foods and spices are said to have an aphrodisiac effect on us, aptly named after the most sensual of goddesses.

Red Lentils meet Cabbage, Dates, Apple, Cinnamon, Hazelnut and Rocket

Dates, apple, hazelnut, cinnamon, rocket… this dish is predestined to be divine. How else but by divine provenance would a combination of ingredients like this one come to be? As a matter of fact, this recipe doesn’t just sound good, it tastes absolutely delicious. I have discovered my favourite dish this winter, at any rate, and have already cooked it twice this week (and it’s only Wednesday morning). Apples, dates, hazelnuts and cinnamon are ideal comfort foods for the wintertime in general and Christmas in particular. And they’re a match made in heaven with red lentils and cabbage. See for yourself and get the recipe here…

Homemade Ravioli

If there’s one thing I really miss in my little gluten-free world, it’s ravioli. I loved them more than anything before I was diagnosed, bought them almost every week at our local market in Dornbirn and blissfully enjoyed them at home. Unfortunately, gluten-free ravioli aren’t really available anywhere. And making them yourself is a culinary highlight, but also extremely time-consuming, so not something you’d do every day. So last summer, I organised a gluten-free ravioli session with my friend Johanna, who is also coeliac, like me. And here’s the result…

Juicy Buckwheat Cake with Chocolate, Carrots and Apple

It’s the weekend, it’s snowing outside and in here, it’s warm and cosy. A perfect afternoon to bake a cake, invite friends over for tea and coffee and enjoy the run-up to Christmas. Here’s one of my favourite cake recipes and, best of all, it’s gluten-free…
